Head of Development (Construction)
Hybrid role out of Miami, FL with travel to the Caribbean

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Head of Development with a strong background in managing the development of large commercial infrastructure projects to support a rapidly growing international portfolio. As Head of Development, you will exercise your capabilities to structure, negotiate, design, and implement projects as they progress through their development lifecycle. You will be responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of development projects, ensuring their technical, economic and financial success and supporting their execution from initial concept to final completion.

Your role will encompass commercially structuring projects, negotiating key agreements, and collaborating with multiple stakeholders and vendors to ensure the viability of the project. Your expertise in sustainable developments, coupled with your strategic mindset and leadership abilities, will play a crucial role in driving the growth and operational efficiency of our organization.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate closely with key team members and advisors to plan, structure, and negotiate agreements (including concession agreements with public authorities). partner with other team members to strategize financing options for the development and construction through underwriting, closing, and oversight of construction, development/redevelopment across project locations
  • Direct innovative and sustainable design development, organize pre-construction activities, and drive value engineering process with development, architecture, and contractors to ensure designs meet expectations and market demand and can be constructed within budget, desired quality and schedule.
  • Identify and address any commercial shifts that may occur during the pre-construction phase such that projects remain financially viable or are discontinued in a timely manner.  
  • Create, review and approve pre-construction and construction activities and budgets and costs for assigned projects; understanding all elements of the overall P&L for each construction project. Various budget cycles will be required in accordance with internal approval processes.
  • Work alongside legal to negotiate contracts, contract claims, disputes, etc; demonstrating exceptional negotiation skills at all points when necessary to secure favorable terms.
  • Responsible for ensuring timely permitting receipt from applicable government agencies, ensuring that final permits meet the demands of the investors and/or clients. Identify and mitigate potential financial risks throughout project life cycles.
  • Identify potential risks through the life cycle of the projects from contracts through safety.
  • Foster a culture of continuous improvement, identifying opportunities for process enhancement and implementing innovative solutions.
  • Ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, promoting a safe working environment for all personnel.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with clients, contractors, and industry stakeholders, serving as a trusted advisor and technical expert.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations, proposals, and bids to showcase the company's capabilities and win new projects.
  • Be adaptable, flexible, and a champion of change for improvement and inefficiencies.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering/Construction, or Project Management. Master's degree preferred.
  • Extensive experience (10+ years) in infrastructure development and construction, ideally ports/transportation with a strong focus on construction development.
  • Demonstrated experience in design management, structuring deals, negotiating contracts (including concession agreements with public authorities and commercial agreements with customers),  within the context of large infrastructure projects.
  • Strong experience building pre-construction budgets.
  • Experience working with [P5] software preferred
  • Deep understanding of  the way a construction business, general contractor, or design build firm operate.
  • Strong financial acumen with the ability to manage project P&L’s, evaluate risks, and strategize financially viable solutions. 
  • Strong leadership and management skills, with the ability to inspire and motivate teams to achieve goals.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Business acumen and experience in business development activities, such as client relationship management and proposal preparation.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with the ability to make sound decisions under pressure.
  • Able to travel up to 25-30% of the time; nationally and internationally.
  • Able to travel to the Miami office as needed.
