Director of Finance

Overview
We are looking for a skilled Director of Finance to join our client’s non-profit team!  The Director of Finance will be a seasoned and mature leader with at least 10-12 years of broad business experience, S/he will have experience creating and driving the analytic framework for planning and managing organizational change in a highly entrepreneurial organization and for managing the business and analytical functions for a complex nonprofit with multiple funding sources.

Responsibilities

Accounting

  • Oversee the accounting and finance department to ensure proper maintenance of all accounting systems and function; supervise accounting and finance staff.
  • Ensure maintenance of appropriate internal controls and financial procedures.
  • Ensure timeliness, accuracy, and usefulness of financial and management reporting for Federal and state funders, foundations, and Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the preparation and communication of monthly and annual financial statements.
  • Coordinate audits and proper filing of tax returns.
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions, including compliance with appropriate Generally Accepted Accounting Principles and Office of Management and Budget audit requirements.
  • Remain up-to-date on nonprofit accounting best practices and state and federal law regarding nonprofit operations.

Finance

  • Develop and implement strategies, procedures, and business plan to support agency growth and structure in conjunction with Executive Team.
  • As a business partner to the CFO and senior leadership, assess organizational performance against strategic plan goals.
  • Coordinate the development and implementation of progress analysis against projected targets.
  • Prepare and present reports for Management and Board surrounding business plans, and strategic planning.

Administration

  • Oversee contract implementation, tracking and management for program (federal awards) and general operations (leases and insurance).
  • Oversee corporate liability policies and coverage annual renewal
  • Participate in corporate policy development as a member of the senior management team, reviewing all formal finance, human resources, information technology, grant management, program, and business development procedures, processes, and administration.

Team Management

  • Mentor and develop an effective team, managing work allocation, training, problem resolution, performance evaluation, and the building of an effective team dynamic.
  • Guide larger, cross-functional teams outside of direct span of control within the various program and support areas to ensure that all initiatives positively support evolving strategy, operational delivery, and financial information needs.

Requirements

  • A minimum of a BS; MBA preferred;
  • Demonstrable passion for nonprofit’s mission; a hands-on manager with integrity and a desire to work in a dynamic environment.
  • Mature and proactive, with evidence of having worked as a true business partner to the CEO of a diverse organization. Nonprofit board experience is preferred.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability, team management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in a senior financial-management role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of progressive financial management strategies.
  • Excellent people skills, with experience collaborating in a multi-disciplinary, diverse, and dynamic team.
  • Strong analytical skills and experience interpreting a strategic vision into an operational model.
  • Past experience successfully partnering with IT staff to manage critical management systems.
  • An effective communicator at all levels in the organization, with strong oral and written skills and a willingness to share information.
  • A collaborative and flexible style, with a strong service mentality.
  • Innovative, with experience funding activities in ways that both cover costs and generate operating margins.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent analytical and abstract reasoning skills, plus excellent organization skills.
