Our client is seeking a highly experienced Practice Lead, HRIS (Workday) to guide the strategic direction, optimization, and daily operations of their Workday environment. This role oversees a small HRIS team while serving as the organization’s senior Workday expert. The Practice Lead will collaborate with HR, Payroll, Finance, and other business units to ensure Workday supports business needs through scalable processes, accurate data, and strong employee experiences.

The ideal candidate combines advanced Workday configuration skills with leadership, governance, and project management capabilities. This individual will drive continuous improvement, system innovation, and data-focused decision making across the HR technology landscape.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of 1–3 HRIS professionals, fostering accountability, growth, and high performance.
  • Oversee the Workday strategy, including the roadmap, prioritization, resource planning, governance, and change management.
  • Establish standards and processes that ensure consistent, high-quality delivery of Workday solutions.
  • Partner with functional stakeholders to align system functionality with operational goals and workflows.
  • Configure and support Workday Payroll, Absence, Time Tracking, Benefits, Core HCM, and Advanced Compensation (business processes, calculated fields, condition rules, EIBs, security, reporting).
  • Maintain a scalable, compliant, and secure Workday architecture with strong performance across modules.
  • Translate business requirements into well-designed, documented technical solutions from discovery through deployment and stabilization.
  • Stay current on Workday releases and recommend enhancements that improve automation, reporting, and user experience.
  • Ensure strong data integrity through audits, controls, and governance practices.
  • Develop dashboards and analytics to support leadership and organizational decision making.
  • Maintain compliance with data privacy and security standards.
  • Serve as the escalation point for complex Workday issues and resolve them with long-term, sustainable solutions.
  • Lead functional and technical projects end-to-end, including testing, integrations, enhancements, and post-launch support.
  • Promote a culture of collaboration, continuous improvement, and customer-centered service.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in HR, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • 7+ years of HRIS experience, including 5+ years of hands-on Workday PATT (Payroll, Absence, Time Tracking) configuration and administration.
  • Additional hands-on experience in Core HCM, Security, Reporting, Benefits, Advanced Compensation, or related modules preferred.
  • 3+ years of leadership experience managing and developing direct reports.
  • Experience supporting multi-state payroll for 5,000+ employees.
  • Strong understanding of HR and payroll operations, data governance, and digital process optimization.
  • Proven ability to balance strategic planning with hands-on configuration and execution.
  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to build trust through transparency and reliable delivery.
  • Workday Payroll certification required; additional certification(s) preferred.
